From an old Prescott estate and a superb and scarce remembrance of verified service in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War is this fine and assuredly genuine full-size United Daughters of the Confederacy Southern Cross of Honor; the brooch panel is original period engraved "Dr. H.S. Pound" in the correct manner. When I obtained the cross I actually thought the middle initial was an "L"; I applied for a UDC certificate using that initial and received a reply that the only "Pound" presented a cross was Henry S. Pound of Mississippi. Another look with a loop showed that what I thought was an "L" was really an "S" engraved over a small scratch in the metal (see 2nd pic where this is clearly obvious); this may be an engraver's error or just a previous flaw, but the "S" is definitely cut over the errant scratch. Thus the certificate supplied by the UDC is correctly for this cross and I guarantee it is so. The UDC certificate shows Henry S. Pound to have been a lieutenant in Company "K", 8th Mississippi infantry (the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System of the National Parks Service further verifies this, saying he is also shown as "Pounds" on some rosters - however, he is "Pound" there and with the UDC); it further states that the medal was posthumously presented at Corinth, November 1912...apparently Dr. Pound applied for his cross and passed away in the interim. Research on the 8th Mississippi reveals it was organized in 1861 - Company "K" was mustered into state service as the "Ellisville Invincibles" at Ellisville 4 May 1861, and the regiment entered into Confederate service in October of that year. The 8th was at various times a portion of the Army of Pensacola, the Army of the Mississippi, and the Army of Tennessee; it was present and engaged in duties at Murfreesboro (47% casualties), the Tullahoma Campaign, Chickamauga (23% casualties), Chattanooga, the Atlanta Campaign (13 killed and 71 wounded), Peach Tree Creek, Atlanta, Franklin, Nashville, the Carolina's Campaign, and at Bentonville...it never wanted for casualties, surrendering and paroled at Greensboro, North Carolina 26 April 1865. Henry S. Pound was Sergeant and then 2nd Lieutenant of Company "K" by roster of the Ellisville Invincibles and also the Soldiers and Sailors System Database on the web. The offered cross is of the Whitehead & Hoag variety and bears their marking; it has a typical genuine name engraving for one of these as opposed to the dubious stamped or crudely inscribed examples often seen. A similar real Southern Cross of Honor to a 5th Virginia soldier recently closed at $761 on Ebay; that was a nice example but to a private and missing the button screw...the present cross is named to an officer and complete with the button-hole attachment. Such an officially awarded UDC Southern Cross of Honor was given only to verified applicant veterans for service in the Confederate military forces during the Civil War and is the closest thing to a Confederate campaign medal; the UDC says only a bestowed veteran could wear the cross - bought of loyalty and honor - they are adamant it was not bought by money or otherwise obtained. Condition is quite fine and apparently never polished or cleaned, with a richly toned aura of treasured keeping and genuine age. All devices are still sharp and distinct as can be seen in the pics and there are no hidden woes to dampen your day. The original name engraving shows appropriate age within the cuts and no alterations; the mentioned button-hole screw is present and accounted. A look at the pics should give a good idea of appearance and condition. If you collect the evocative mementos of service during the American Civil War and especially thes | |||||||
